what my life looks like every day

I’ve posted a few times about what my homeschool looks like on the day to day.

Like here: a day in the life without programs or workbooks part one

And here: a day in the life without programs or workbooks part two

And here: be willing to learn from the littlest

And so many more.

But my life looks a lot different and I’m going to walk through what that might be like when you too, get down to the last kid. Because you will.

Baby Rosebud, so named for her rosebud-ness at age four when I started this blog and because she was the youngest of seven - is fourteen now and a delight to mine eyes.

Let’s jump in. We’ve had grandbabies and daughters and sons-in-law here for the last five weeks and they sadly go home soon. But the transition from all the people to the three of us is interesting to you. I’m pretty sure. We’ll start with yesterday. Yesterday was a beautiful hot sunny day here, and all the people congregated for dinner here. I made two salads from all the yummy stuff in our garden and Rosemary Chicken which is the easiest large gathering dish on the planet, so easy that I’ll share it with you here:

Put lots of chicken pieces in a casserole dish with a lid. Enough pieces for all the people. You can also add cut up potatoes and carrots and onions and garlic if you want. It’s up to you. Add some dots of butter on the top and some salt and pepper. Then put a giant sprig of Rosemary or four or five small ones on top (this is the static part of the “recipe” ~ it isn’t Rosemary Chicken if there’s not Rosemary), put the lid on, cook it at 275 degrees all day or at a higher temperature for a shorter time. It’s up to you. Anyway, it should smell good.

We ate outdoors as we have done for the last eight weeks.

Anyway. After supper, Grampy suggested taking the grand babies in a ride in his tractor trailer. This suggestion was met with different layers of enthusiasm, but in the end, most of them tumbled into the trailer for their big ride. Small setback, however, as there was a carrot in the ignition. Grampy saved the day by using our new Dyson vacuum to get it out. Once on their way, it was very fun. Don’t worry, it was very safe because Grampy drove facing back to the children to make sure they weren’t falling out. And also, it’ a very small tractor.

It’s such a small tractor that “tractor” is actually pretty flattering. It’s a ride on mower made by John Deere, and it’s lovingly called The John Deere tractor around here.

We had cake for the Feast of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin made by Rosebud who does all the baking. Being late in the summer, it cooled off early. We lit the big propane fire pit and sat around drinking wine and watching the kids fawn all over Auntie Rosebud.

And if that doesn’t beat all, today I hurt my back, and laid around most of the day except to make cocktails and throw leftovers into the oven. So. Then I went for a massage. And things got better because we watched my favourite movie, The Emperor’s New Groove.

Oh, homeschooling….yes, a bit of that happened, a “soft start.” Rosebud had her first Latin class of the year yesterday and a class on Dante’s Divine Comedy with Joseph Pearce…all this with Homeschool Connections…highly recommended.

What will tomorrow bring?
