my little corner

In our new podcast episode we talk about order and preparing for the next school year. I’ve put this post here because it is relevant to the podcast! Originally published April 8, 2014

While useless as a breakfast nook for a family of nine, this little space is perfect for the snuggly variety of schoolwork.  Especially lovely are the dog prints on the window which serve to remind me that he is, in fact, still a puppy, hulk that he is…and will outgrow this.

Here is where I keep my stuff.  All that is needful to have learning be simple and cozy. And then some.  Here is where it put on my attitude for the day if I have forgotten to put it on when I got up.

What are the basics that I need here?  A place for the things each child is working on.  A “done” basket.  Pens, pencils, erasers, extra exercise books and loose leaf.  I’ve also got a few resource books that I frequently use for dictation and reference books; a bible, dictionary, thesaurus.

And I need to talk once again about banal little plastic containers.  These containers are brilliant. I use them for so many things.  A cautionary tale:  do not buy the Staples brand of these.  They are garbage and you will curse me.  and that’s not nice.

The Sterlite brand is great, and in lots of different sizes, they are called pencil boxes or ruler boxes.

The Spacemaker brand is awesome, too, the word on the street is that these boxes are available at Walmart and Target. Once again, do NOT, my friends, buy the evil Staples brand. Note: I always mark my boxes on both ends so that when I put them away haphazardly, I still know what’s in them. Also use for craft supplies, bandaids, etc. I own about 100.

A few other things we talk about in this episode:

Heavy weight loose leaf paper

Bees wax modelling compound

Wikki Stix

Schliech animals

Billy bookshelves for the win
